31 Fresh Would You Rather Questions

I recently posted about how useful writing prompts are along with a list of a few writing prompts for the month of October. I like to use writing prompts as a tool to get students to write. In the morning, however, I like to ask them a “would you rather” question while I’m doing the attendance. I find that this helps activate their minds for learning. I ask the question to each student, and their answer tells me that they are there, so I check their names off. I especially like to do this while I am teaching my unit on opinion writing. Encouraging students to think about what makes an opinion, and what their opinion is, helps them through the unit. Integrating opinion writing (and opinion thinking) into the routine of the classroom helps put students in the learning mindset from the start of the day.

1. Would you rather fly or be invisible?
2. Would you rather be able to speak Japanese or play the guitar?
3. Would you rather have $200 today, or $700 a year from now?
4. Would you rather have an extra finger or an extra toe?
5. Would you rather be made out of cheese or be made of gum?
6. Would you rather be half your height for the day, or double your height for the day?
7. Would you rather be rich or famous?
8. Would you rather breathe underwater or in space?
9. Would you rather be able to do a backflip or climb a tall tree?
10. Would you rather stay up late or get up early?
11. Would you rather have an iPhone or an iPad?
12. Would you rather spend the day on a spaceship or a submarine?
13. Would you rather spend the night in a blanket fort or a pillow fort?
14. Would you rather do a cartwheel or a handstand?
